On 8th December, Boathouse Volleyball Club was awarded a £10,000 grant by the Lottery funded 'Awards for All' scheme. This substantial award has been given for the development of volleyball across West Yorkshire, focusing on Kirklees and Calderdale. The club will provide opportunities for juniors from 10-18 and local ethnic communities to participate in a fantastic, social team sport. The money will aid the clubs' ambitions to make volleyball more accessible and raise the profile of this sport. The cheque was presented to the clubs' chairman, Kevin O'Malley and coach, Laurent Zeiller at the recent Great Britain v Israel World Championship qualifying match by former Boathouse junior player, Kieran O'Malley, GB captain, Ben Pipes and team mates. During a club committee meeting, Kevin O'Malley, Chair said 'Volleyball is a very popular and high profile global sport. We are fortunate to have been able to link with an established Eastern European community in the Calderdale area and will offer the opportunity to allow them to play and progress in a structured and affordable environment.'Brighouse High School will initially be the focus for the clubs' junior program. The plan is to expand this junior focus so that it becomes a formalised school-club link and involves other schools in the area. It is also planned to utilise some of the funding on coach education which will allow a more wide-spread ability to deliver the program. Purchase of equipment, including outdoor courts, will also be a priority. This will ensure that all our venues will have safe and up-to-date facilities and will also allow us to bring the game any area, quickly and easily. All that will be required is enthusiasm and a sense of fun! We wish to encourage any group or individuals who consider themselves up for a challenge to get in touch either with Kevin O'Malley (chair) or Laurent Zeiller (coach).Coach, Laurent Zeiller stated 'The club has had much success in the past with juniors, a number going on to represent England Juniors and in Kieran O'Malley's case, to the England Senior Squad. He is now a regular setter for Great Britain with 28 caps. We would hope to build upon these past successes and develop future players to this high standard.' |
